Shoulder

Shoulder

The shoulder girdle is comprised of a series of complex bones and joints joined together by ligaments, tendons and muscles. The end of the shoulder is connected to the breastbone (sternum), neck (cervical spine) and chest (thorax).

Shoulder pain is common. Pain can be caused by trauma (physical injury), mechanical problems (such as sub-acromial impingement or instability), inflammation (such as arthritis, bursitis or capsulitis CHOOSE ONE), degeneration (such as rotator cuff tears) or due to nerve irritation (involving nerves around the shoulder or in the neck itself).

Shoulder disorders may cause considerable pain, can limit the ability to perform many routine activities and can significantly disrupt comfortable sleep. Our physiotherapists will perform a full subjective and objective assessment to you considering a wide range of factors including referred pain, sporting technique, biomechanical and postural issues.

Treatment options include:

  • Mobilization of lower cervical and thoracic spine
  • Good exercise prescription
  • Postural changes to ‘de-load’ the joint
  • Maintaining good function of surrounding joints
